A lumbar sympathetic block is an injection of local anesthetic around or directly into the sympathetic nerves, which are part of the sympathetic nervous system on either side of your spine in your lower back. Sometimes, these nerves may carry pain signals from the peripheral tissue back to the spinal cord. The lumbar sympathetic block interrupts that signal so you are given relief.

What it Does

If you suffer from neuropathy or peripheral vascular disease, lumbar sympathetic blocks may be able to help. In addition to providing pain relief, a lumbar sympathetic block can also reduce color, swelling, sweating, and other changes in the lower extremities while improving mobility.

The injections take as little as 10 to 30 minutes. You skin will be numbed at the injection site with a local anesthetic to make the injection less uncomfortable. Most patients also have intravenous sedation but you will not be unconscious.

You can experience pain relief for many hours. In fact, many patients experience longer relief after each injection. If you suffer from lower back pain, then we will determine if lumbar sympathetic blocks will help relieve your pain. We may recommend combining this injection with other treatment options in order to optimize your pain relief.
